High Heels? Safe Bet!
There they are – the shoes of your dreams. High heels are “in” again and often breath-taking, not just in appearance, but also in heel height. And so you are wondering: How on earth can a woman walk gracefully in those heels? Follow these tips for a show-stopping appearance.
Purchase and preparation
- When trying on high heels take your time and walk a few extra laps around the shoe department until that good body feel sets in. Look for quality: Good leather, foot-friendly soles and superb workmanship are a must. If you are not 100 percent sure about them: Hands – or better – feet off!
- The perfect time: Your feet and legs will change throughout the day. Therefore, it is best to buy shoes at the same time you plan on wearing them. Beginners should start with a chunkier heel and work their way up to thinner, higher models. Boots provide better support and are ideal as entry level heels.
- Practice for your big entrance. You can train your muscles and sense of balance in preparation for high heels. At home, practice standing and walking on your toes. As a side effect, this will also train your legs and backside. Strengthen your tendons by rotating and stretching your ankles after each practice session.
- It’s best to practice your walk and posture in front of a mirror. When in high heels, remember: Head up, chest out and tummy in. Point your feet slightly outwards when walking. Then swing one foot with a slight kick and place it in front of the other. Practice on different floor surfaces. Start with a hard floor that’s not too slick. Once you can walk with confidence, continue practicing on soft carpeting.
Wear them right
- Make a statement: Don’t wear high heels all the time. That’s good for two reasons: fashion and your health. Your tendons and your back will thank you for alternating regularly between flats and heels.
- Before putting on your heels warm up your feet, and periodically rotate and stretch your ankles while you’re wearing them. Pros always wear their high heels for the show only, not en route there. Avoid letting your ankles get cold; warm tendons and muscles are better able to catch an ankle before it twists. If you have to stand for an extended time, make sure to rotate your ankles now and then. This will keep you relaxed and flexible.
And your big entrance in those dream heels will become a real show-stopper!
